Deadly listeria outbreak possibly linked to deli meat

Salami Lunchmeat Platter

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says that deli meats have been linked to a deadly Listeria outbreak that has sickened ten people in Florida, Massachusetts, and NY, and caused one death in Florida.

Due to the Listeria outbreak-a foodborne illness that can cause fever, muscle aches, and also diarrhea-ten people from Massachusetts, Florida, and NY were taken to hospitals, while one person died in Florida, after catching the infection.

Infections have been reported in three states, Florida, Massachusetts, and NY, and all 10 people who have fallen ill were hospitalized.

Deli meat is the likely source of the outbreak, the CDC said citing epidemiological evidence.

Nine people infected all reported eating Italian-style meats such as salami, mortadella and prosciutto.

The CDC recommends that these high-risk populations avoid eating deli meats, unless heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving. The bacteria in a contaminated deli product may spread to other deli meats and cheeses in shared display cases or equipment at deli counters. So are pregnant women, because the illness can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. The agency also advises storing the meat in the refrigerator, away from other food and keeping surrounding surfaces clean.

Listeriosis can cause different symptoms, depending on the person and the part of the body affected.

In addition, listeriosis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.

First signs of infection can take up to 30 days or more before they appear, while symptoms can occur after eating contaminated food.
