Covid: Italy among countries added to Scotland's quarantine list

Crete added to the UK's travel corridor list

Italy has been put on the government's travel corridor list.

Italy, which is visited by large numbers of United Kingdom residents, was one of the last major countries in Europe on the safe list.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said Italy was being removed because coronavirus data "indicated the weekly cases and test positivity are increasing".

Crete has been removed from the list of places with restrictions, so people arriving from the Greek island will no longer have to quarantine.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom recorded 18,980 Covid cases.

"Our cities, coasts, countryside and major attractions are world class" - Zappacosta told The Independent - "We have implemented robust protocols to keep our visitors safe so this is a very disappointing development for tourism in Italy and will surely delay our recovery".

The Transport Secretary said that as of 4am on Sunday all travellers returning to England from Italy as well as San Marino and Vatican City will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

From 4am Sunday 18 Oct, if you arrive from Crete, you will NO LONGER need to self-isolate.

The Government uses a threshold of 20 cases per 100,000 to trigger an assessment of whether a country should be added to the "red list".

Yesterday, Italy recorded 7,332 new cases of Covid-19, the highest toll ever, which means that cases in the Mediterranean country are now at 58.3 per 100,000 over the course of seven days.

However, anyone travelling to somewhere exempt from the non-essential travel advice may still need to self-isolate on their return to the United Kingdom if the country is not also on the travel corridors list.

In a statement the DfT warned the government would "rapidly" remove countries from the safe list if the risk to public health "becomes too high".

Those who decide to travel to a country after a quarantine rule has come into force will have to self-isolate for two weeks on their return.
