Charlie Hebdo sparks Turkish fury with cartoon of Erdogan

"They are just showing their own vulgarity and immorality".

Top Turkish officials condemned a caricature scorning President Tayyip Erdogan in the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, calling it a "disgusting effort" to "spread its cultural racism and hatred".

He is one of several leaders in the Muslim world angry with France over its response to the murder of teacher Samuel Paty, who showed pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad as part of a lesson on free speech.

"I condemn this incorrigible French rag's immoral publication concerning our president", Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay wrote on Twitter. "An attack on personal rights is not humour and freedom expression", he said.

The Turkish leader's spokesman accused French President Emmanuel Macron of seeding such an insult with a hostile stance toward Islam.

The cartoon on the cover of Charlie Hebdo showed Mr. Erdogan sitting in a white T-shirt and underpants, holding a canned drink along with a woman wearing an Islamic hijab.

Vice-President Fuat Oktay called on the worldwide community to raise its voice against "this disgrace".

Both Turkish and Pakistani parliaments have passed resolutions condemning Macron's statements and urged their governments to recall envoys from Paris. France, in turn, has called on its European Union allies to take measures against Turkey following the boycott call.

The United States did not immediately offer further comment on the row or the merits of Turkey's criticism of France.

Tensions between France and Turkey have mounted in recent months over Turkish actions in Syria, Libya and the Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Tatar, an Ankara-backed hardline politician who won the election last week, said a meeting due to be convened shortly by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres could test the ground for a two-state arrangement. He said there would be many discussions "to see whether we are going to continue to wait or take action earlier".

Presidential spokesperson Fahrettin Altun took to Twitter to say: "French President Macron's anti-Muslim agenda is bearing fruit!"
