Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling for more coronavirus testing in schools that fall in Orange and Rockland County's yellow zones.
Despite the declines, the positive test percentages in the clusters are still much higher than other areas of the state. On Tuesday, 938 New Yorkers were in the hospital with the virus, the highest rate since June 25.
A federal judge on Friday rejected a request from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn to void NY state's limits on religious gatherings in coronavirus hot spots, which the diocese argued had effectively closed its churches.
Out of the 133 thousand tests processed statewide the infection rate was 1.09%, but in the red zones, the positivity is 4.84%.
Cuomo insisted his measures were not meant to single out religious groups and were consistent with other steps in geographic clusters he called "red zones". He says New York's health officials have developed a more precisely targeted way to measure transmission, and has the capacity, "to see things that normally you don't see".
The state is now focused on a handful of clusters, and "we are addressing these clusters through our targeted approach to ensure that they don't become community spread", said Cuomo. Cuomo has said much of the increase in hospitalizations can be traced to the clusters the state is tracking. Of the 146 new patients admitted, almost half were from the 20 hot spots.
