United States removes 10 per cent tariff on Canadian aluminium

"Accordingly, the United States will modify the terms of the 10 per cent tariff imposed in August on imports of Canadian non-alloyed unwrought aluminium".

"Our challenge now is to guard against the fatigue that can lead us to relax these personal precautions", Dr. Theresa Tam said in a statement as provinces reported almost 500 new cases on Sunday.

This major move, retroactive to September 1, was announced by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Withdrawing the tariffs does come with some strings.

Ms Freeland did not respond directly when asked if Canada was at risk of butting up against the limits outlined by the US.

"We have not agreed to anything".

"What has happened today is that the United States has chosen to unilaterally lift its tariffs on Canadian aluminum exports to the United States..." And of course, we welcome that decision.

But at an event in OH last month, President Trump announced that he was re-imposing border taxes on certain types of Canadian aluminium, citing a flood of under-priced metal into the country.

The official added that, "We're glad the USA lifted tariffs - that's a victory for Canada and the U.S".

Now, Canada will not be moving forward with its planned retaliation.

The past several weeks have seen a resurgence in COVID-19 across Canada after a summer lull, which Trudeau said is a reminder that Canada is "not out of the woods yet".

"Everyone in Canada understands that aluminum from Canada is no threat to national security in the United States", Champagne said Monday as he prepared for a two-day cabinet retreat with Liberal colleagues at a Global Affairs office building in Ottawa.

As soon as Trump said the new tariffs were coming, Canadian officials said they planned to hit back with $3.6 billion in dollar-for-dollar retaliatory countermeasures once the industry was consulted on a broad list of potential products to slap tariffs on.

The government had already issued a list of possible products on the target list, including beverage cans, washing machines and golf clubs.

Canada was set to hit the USA with retaliatory tariffs today but this could change the state of play.

The trio wrote to Trump asking him to consider the "negative consequences" for consumers and American suppliers. US business groups said the taxes raised costs for manufacturers that depend on imported aluminum, while not addressing the real threat to American aluminum producers: massive overproduction by China that drives prices down.

Trump originally imposed the tariffs on aluminum imports from most countries in 2018.

The US said it was backing off after determining that imports were likely to decline after an earlier surge.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office confirmed the US decision, but two senior sources said it wasn't an agreement, and pointed out that Lighthizer's statement left many questions in the minds of the Canadian government.
