United Kingdom economy grew by 6.6% in July, but 'tough autumn ahead'

COVID-19 British economy grows for third straight month expands by 6.6% in July

United Kingdom gross domestic product rose 6.6% in the month of July, as the economy continued to recover from earlier lockdowns, according to the Office for National Statistics.

U.K. GDP shrank by a record 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020.

Thomas Pugh, UK economist at Capital Economics, said the 6.6% monthly rise in GDP, although a little slower than July, "still suggests that the record-breaking negative growth rate of GDP in Q2 will be followed by a record-breaking positive growth rate in Q3".

UK GDP rose by 6.6% in July, though this was less than the 8.7% growth recorded in June.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) of Britain said on Friday that the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country saw the third straight monthly increase in July of 2020, however, it stayed under the pre-pandemic levels.

But economic output is still 11.7 per cent smaller than it was in February before the pandemic. The three-month/three-month drop in services output slowed to 8.1% in July from 19.9% in June.

"Education grew strongly as some children returned to school, while pubs, campsites and hairdressers all saw notable improvements".

"All areas of manufacturing, particularly distillers and vehicle makers, saw improvements, while housebuilding also continued to recover".

Growth in the much smaller manufacturing and construction sectors exceeded forecasts.

LONDON-The U.K. economy expanded in July as its reopening broadened after a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.
