Pepperdine remains in the top 50 for "Best Value Schools" and "Most Innovative Schools", ranking 46 and 50, respectively.

Kansas State University in Manhattan ranked 170th overall and 83rd among public universities, the report said.

Cal Poly is also ranked as one of the most veteran-friendly universities.

Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh tied for No. 58 with the University of Washington and the University of Maryland, College Park. NU has moved up steadily in the ranks in recent years, "thanks to its dedication to promoting student excellence" and its status as a top-tier research university, the release said.

The University received several rankings in the latest edition, including Best Science Lab Facilities (#14), Most Active Student Government (#14), Most Popular Study Abroad Program (#17), Best Career Services (#18); and Best-Run Colleges (#18).

The University's improved position follows two consecutive years of sharp falls in the annual rankings, placing GW in its best ranked position since 2018. Drury University in Springfield earned the No. 26 spot and Stephens College in Columbia ranked 46th.

UM was joined in the ranking by fellow in-state schools like Michigan State University, which climbed four spots to No. 80, Michigan Technological University at No. 153 and University of Detroit Mercy at no. 187. MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe ranked 91st and Friends University in Wichita ranked No. 98.

How are schools assessed and ranked?

In the list of "2020 Academic Programs to Look For", Pepperdine ranked number 15 in the Study Abroad category, which recognizes institutions that offer programs that "involve substantial academic work and considerable interaction between the student and the culture". The rankings evaluate colleges across 16 quantitative and qualitative measures, including graduation and retention rates, admissions statistics, faculty resources, alumni giving, and assessments completed by peer institutions and high school guidance counselors. The organization's methodology, according to its website, uses "only thoroughly vetted academic data from our surveys and reliable third-party sources". Most schools report their data directly to the outlet.

According to a news release, NU is also one of only four top 10 universities in the US also ranked in the top 20 of each of its five graduate schools.
