Tropical depression could form in Gulf soon, and that’s not all

FIRST ALERT New depression developing near Florida soon to be Sally

The second Gulf disturbance was in the north-central Gulf as of Friday morning.

"Upper-level winds are expected to become conducive for development, and a tropical depression could form while this system moves slowly west-northwestward over the eastern Gulf of Mexico this weekend and early next week".

As of noon, the storm was 2,032 miles east-southeast of the island and moving west-northwest at 16mph.

There are a couple named storms and disturbances out in the ocean that will likely avoid the USA or any landfall, but Tropical Storm Paulette formed Monday, as did Tropical Storm Rene.

Swells generated by Paulette are expected to reach portions of the Leeward Islands Thursday night and Friday and will continue to spread westward to portions of the Greater Antilles, Bahamas and Bermuda into the weekend.

The good news is that the Atlantic Ocean is huge and many of these tropical storms won't significantly impact us stateside.

Paulette is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 miles per hour (17 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue through Friday.

Rene continued to be a minimal tropical storm with top winds of 45 miles per hour.

They could cause deadly rip currents, the hurricane center said.

Invest 96L is a surface trough of low pressure located over the northwestern Bahamas that is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms that extend from the northwestern and central Bahamas eastward a few hundred miles over the western Atlantic (marked with an orange "X").

The National Weather Service says the "soggy and unsettled weather pattern" may bring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms every day this weekend.

The fourth system is near the coast of Africa and is expected to turn north. It has a low (20 per cent) chance of formation during the next five days.

It is expected to move across the Florida peninsula today and into the eastern Gulf by Saturday.

A tropical wave is now moving off the west coast of Africa, producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms.

Tropical Storm Paulette was on track for a direct hit on Bermuda as a category 1 hurricane early Monday.

Disturbances 4 and 5 "have the highest chances of formation", NHC said in a tweet.

What gets our attention with this potential system is we'll likely see it come off the coast of African farther south than Paulette and Rene, and those southern trajectories are the ones we have to monitor closely because they have the potential to make it closer to the USA mainland. It has a medium (40 per cent) chance of formation during the next five days.
