Ted Cruz asks Department of Justice to investigate Netflix’s ‘Cuties’

Cuties Netflix

Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has weighed into the controversy surrounding the film "Cuties" and has formally asked that the Department of Justice investigate whether Netflix violated federal child pornography laws by putting the film on its platform.

Over the past few weeks, the most absurd and annoying controversy has been unfurling online in response to the Sundance award-winning French film, Cuties.

The poster Netflix used to promote the film featured the young cast members in a "provocative" dance pose, donning skimpy outfits, typical of an eisteddfod.

In a segment during the film on Netflix, Doucouré says that in performing research for the film - her feature directorial debut - she met with hundreds of pre-teens to understand how they perceived their femininity in today's society.

Since the release of 'Cuties, ' detractors have launched a petition on Change.org, vowing to cancel their Netflix accounts. "On Twitter, "#CancelNetflix" was a top-trending topic Thursday in response to the film.

While many gave Netflix the benefit of the doubt, many were shocked by the film seemingly being worse than originally expected.

In a letter to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Yost wrote that although the director of "Cuties", Maïmouna Doucouré, has stated the film is meant to fight the hypersexualization of young girls, "the manner in which the film attempts to do so is misguided and does more harm than good".

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost on Monday joined three other state attorneys general in asking Netflix to take down the movie "Cuties", arguing that it sexualizes children in a way that is "counterproductive" in the fight against human trafficking.

Centered around 11-year-old Amy, a Senegalese Muslim who explores life away from her traditional upbringing by performing with a girls' dance crew, the Maïmouna Doucouré-directed film has received rave reviews from film critics but was trashed on social media when its U.S. promotional poster was released this past August. "Of course not." Doucoure, born and raised in Paris in a Senegalese family, adds, "I put my heart into this film because this is my story".
