Air quality is only expected to improve marginally by Tuesday as an infusion of Pacific ocean air starts to push smoke from wildfires in OR and Washington state east.
Portland's air quality was literally off the chart yesterday.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) reading in San Francisco Monday morning was actually worse than it was on Sunday (190s vs. 160s) as smoke particles and polluted air continues to hover closer to ground level.
Fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5, refers to airborne solid or liquid droplets with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres (µm) or less.
Ground-level ozone is not emitted directly into the air, but rather it is formed when nitrogen oxides (pollutants emitted when fuels are burned) and volatile organic compounds (emitted from solvents) react in the air in the presence of sunlight.
The Los Angeles Zoo will close its gates to the public this Sunday, Sept. 13, and Monday, Sept. 14, due to the unhealthy air quality caused by the local Bobcat and El Dorado wildfires.
"Wildfire smoke is a natural part of our environment but it is important to be mindful that exposure to smoke may affect your health", Environment Canada said in a September 9 bulletin.
Those with chronic underlying medical conditions or acute infections such as COVID-19 should postpone or reduce outdoor physical activity until the air quality advisories in place are dropped, especially if breathing feels uncomfortable.
