Ontario logs 170 new COVID-19 cases, majority in Toronto area

Mayors have power to roll back reopenings: Ford

Ford said his message to Toronto Mayor John Tory and other municipal leaders is to use their own public health authority to, for instance, reduce the maximum gathering sizes of 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors.

She says 28 public health units in Ontario are reporting 5 or fewer cases with 14 reporting no new cases.

Premier Francois Legault says the vast majority of Quebecers have followed COVID-19 public health guidelines for the past six months. If they feel comfortable in doing it, God bless them.

Despite a recent upward trend in daily cases across Quebec and 16 new hospitalizations over a two-day period, Legault said "I think that we are still in a situation that is under control". York Region saw 28 and Peel Region 22.

The premiers of Ontario and Quebec are calling on Ottawa to increase health transfers to the provinces, saying sustainable, long-term funding is required on top of the federal COVID-19 relief to address health-care issues that predate the pandemic.

The premier said rollbacks, if they occur, would be on a regional basis, but added he was prepared to support mayors who made a decision to pause or reverse reopenings.

Ford said he would like the federal government to review enforcement of its quarantine rules.

Ontario reported an additional 170 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, concentrated mainly in the Greater Toronto Area. "Together, we have a stronger voice and will work to ensure our shared priorities are heard by the federal government, including addressing the underlying imbalance in our healthcare funding arrangement through the CHT".
