Once the hurricane center hits the final name, Wilfred, storms will be named after Greek letters. It's been a record-breaking, busy season so far!

Mr Douty added: "Beyond the Cabo Verde Islands, Tropical Storm Rene is expected to become a hurricane while continuing to the northwest across the open waters of the central Atlantic".

Paulette, which is about 1,285 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands and nearly 1,295 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands as of 11 a.m., does not pose an immediate threat to land, according to the National Hurricane Center, and is slated to turn west or west-northwest in the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts.

The NHC forecast "little change in strength" is expected throughout Tuesday, but "gradual strengthening" is expected on Thursday and Friday.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season is peaking, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring recently formed Tropical Storms Paulette and Rene in the Atlantic. The hurricane center expects Rene to get stronger over the next day or two, and it could briefly become a hurricane by late in the week. Gradual weakening is then expected to begin on Wednesday and should continue for a couple days thereafter. Paulette's forecast shows it nearing Bermuda by early next week.

"An area of low pressure now to the southeast of Bermuda will track to the west early this week", Douty said.

The first is southwest of Bermuda and has a moderate chance of developing as it moves towards the Mid-Atlantic states over the next few days.

The Carolinas could see scattered showers and rip currents along the coast as a result of the system.
