Monster Energy may have caused the Gods & Monsters name change

Immortals Fenyx

In the images, the publisher presented the definitive gameplay experience of Immortal Fenyx Rising, introducing the customizable protagonist Fenyx, who must venture into a remodeled Ancient Greece to save the gods of the titan Typhon. The company cited its gaming website and games industry sponsorships as evidence of its involvement in games and how it could lead to brand confusion.

Ubisoft held its second summer showcase today, giving updates on a number of its live games and new looks at upcoming ones like Immortals: Fenyx Rising, the revamped mythological adventure shown in years past as Gods & Monsters.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is set for release on December 3 on all platforms (current and next gen), though we'll have to wait and see if any of the monsters of Greek mythology made it through unscathed or if they also had to be renamed to "Terrors" or something else entirely.

As discovered by TechRaptor and reported by Hoeg Law, the decision by Ubisoft to change the name of Gods & Monsters to Immortals Fenyx Rising spun from a dispute by Monster Energy over the trademark for the original name. Monster Energy opposed the registration of the name Gods & Monsters under the belief that it "will be damaged" by it, and noted the focus of the term "Monster" in its own marketing. Surely you've heard of Monster Energy Supercross: The Official Video game?

However, it seems Ubisoft also faced opposition from the Monster Energy brand. Ubisoft responded a month later with a much briefer eight-page filing denying Monster's claims. According to Monster Energy, this would have indeed been the case. However, Ubisoft didn't want to sacrifice a massive amount of money and time just fighting the claim.
