Mirim Lee Produces Magic to Secure Dramatic Major Victory

LPGA ANA Inspiration- Second Round

© APWF Mirim Lee, right, of South Korea, is greeted by Nelly Korda, center, and Brooke M. Henderson after winning the LPGA's ANA Inspiration golf tournament at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Sunday Sept. 13, 2020.

The South Korean deliberately sent her second shot into the fencing, then took her drop before holing out her eagle chip to send her into a playoff.

The 29-year-old, who claimed her fourth LPGA victory and her first since the 2017 Kia Classic, added later: "To be honest, I feel like I must be a little insane for winning and for having won this, and I think I'll be able to feel it once I meet my family and reunite with them".

Lee pitched in from long range for par on the 16th, dropped a shot on the next hole and appeared to be out of it until her chip from behind the 18th green rammed against the pin and dropped for eagle and a 5-under 67. Henderson and Korda, the daughter of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr, had shared the overnight lead, but were unable to close out victory after shooting 69s.

She got up-and-down for birdie and a 69 to join the playoff.

Korda answered with a tee shot into 1.5m for birdie on the par-3 14th, and suddenly her lead was at two.

With the latest feat, South Korea has produced an LPGA major champion for the tenth straight season.

Korda began with a two-shot lead and fell three shots back with a rough stretch on the front nine, particularly the sixth hole by hitting 5-wood through the fairway into the gnarly rough and not getting over the water, leading to double bogey.

Two days after her 23rd birthday, Henderson came out of the gate strong Sunday with birdies on the second and fourth holes.

It was talked about all week, and the chalet in a normal year has blocked shots hit too hard.

Lee's red hot wedge came to the rescue when she chipped in for birdie on 16 to pull within one of the leaders before just as quickly seeming to throw it all away with bogey at the 17th dropping her two off the pace. Korda held onto the lead at the 17th with an 2m par putt, and that set up the big finish on the 18th.

She already chipped in for birdie from short of the green at No 6. Her birdie putt missed on the left side. "Mi-rim played great today and so did Nelly". "I felt like I missed a lot of putts".

Jimenez, the Spanish star tied for the lead with David Toms and Dicky Pride after the rainy first round, birdied the par-4 15th as well as 16 and 18 in a 66.

With the tournament taking place behind closed doors this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials took the unorthodox step of replacing the grandstand behind the green on 18 with a blue wall bearing the logo of the event sponsor, Japanese airline ANA.
