Manchester United Fans Are Furious At Their Lack Of Signings This Summer

Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept faith with Harry Maguire as club captain despite the defender being given a 21-month suspended jail sentence for a brawl on holiday in Greece

We asked specifically that he should have had a rest.

Solskjaer is furious Greenwood was called up by England just 20 days after finishing a year-long campaign with United during which he played 49 games and also questioned why the 18-year-old was put up for a news conference while on worldwide duty.

'I've worked and the club have worked and all the staff here worked really hard, ' Solskjaer said. 'Maybe I should have got hold of Gareth's number.

"Of course I want players in the building that we want to work with and who want to be a part of it, and who want to be here", Solskjaer said ahead of this evening's clash at home to Crystal Palace.

It is understood United can meet the 20-year-old's personal terms, but there is no agreement over a fee, and the Bundesliga side are increasingly confident of keeping him.

"The kid had a fantastic season".

Let's be brutally honest here, United are playing catch-up on Liverpool and Manchester City and need to find a way to make up ground after finishing an embarrassing 33-points behind Jurgen Klopp's Reds last season, but it seems like they don't have the cash to sign the big names this summer. First thing that happens is 1) he's called up, and 2) he's right there in the press.

Signing him would also send a statement to the footballing world that we remain a choice destination for the top stars. We've done what we can to protect him.

"This is where he feels at home".

"We understand to get further we need to strengthen the team but let's wait and see if we manage to bring anyone in". I'm not saying it (the hotel incident) is their fault.

"I tried my best to give him a rest over the summer".

"My focus is us, of course".

Solskjaer's comments were met with surprise and anger at the FA.

"Well, you know, when we sit down and we discuss and we have plans, sometimes it doesn't happen as planned", Solskjaer said.

They also claimed United were informed out of courtesy of the intention to put Greenwood up for interview and no objections were raised at the time - while there is amazement at the FA that Solskjaer does not have Southgate's number.

United's off-season was also disrupted by captain Harry Maguire's suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being accused of various charges following an alleged brawl during a family holiday on the island of Mykonos.

Maguire's conviction was later nullified pending a retrial.
