Hurricane Sally swamps US Gulf Coast with flooding and torrential rain

Remnant moisture from what is now Tropical Depression Sally will travel from the Gulf Coast to Atlantic Canada over the next few days.

At that time, the AIRS image showed those strong storms over the Florida Panhandle, much of Alabama, Georgia and extending into western SC.

The storm is believed to have killed one person in Alabama. He said first responders reported two deaths but believed they were unrelated to the storm.

Teddy's hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from its centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 255 miles (405 km).

At least eight waterways in south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle were expected to hit major flood stage by Thursday. By late Wednesday, the floodwaters had started to recede in some areas, though the National Weather Service warned that extensive river flooding would be a concern through the weekend.

Winds tore through a hurricane shutter of his home and smashed one window and collapsed a rooftop sky light.

"We worked with the State Attorney's Office in prior incidences where we responded to natural disasters; they do not like looters", said Morgan. By Wednesday morning, the Naval Air Station in Pensacola saw two feet of rain and NOAA recorded almost six feet of storm surge, enough to submerge much of downtown.

But that did not prepare him for Hurricane Sally, which flipped his camper and pushed it into his Gulf Shores home, breaking off the front steps.

Another study from that year that researched only Atlantic Hurricanes found that storms there have slowed by as much as 15 percent.

An emergency crew rescued two people on Dauphin Island, Ala., after the hurricane ripped the roof off their home and the rest of the house began to crumble.

Morgan urged residents to stay home unless they are in immediate danger.

"Sally has a characteristic that isn't often seen and that's a slow forward speed, and that's going to exacerbate the flooding", said Ed Rappaport, deputy director of the hurricane center.

"I'm like OK, we are not going to drown", Hayes, 56, said of the experience.

That system is being investigated by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) this afternoon, and if NHC hurricane hunters find a closed low pressure area it will be classified as a tropical depression or tropical storm.

It's in the extended forecast by the National Hurricane Center, but there is better consensus that Hurricane Teddy could have an impact on the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada early next week.

The Chattahoochee River, which affects Muscogee, Chattahoochee, and Lee and Russell counties, remains under a flood warning until 2 a.m. September 20.

Besides the new tropical threat in the Gulf, Hurricane Teddy is strengthening and heading close to Bermuda by early next week.
