How much does USA pressure over Brexit hurt Boris Johnson?

Joe Biden has warned the United Kingdom that it must honour the Northern Irish peace deal

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is in Washington for talks, told U.S. congressional leaders yesterday that the "politicisation" of Northern Ireland issues by Brussels in the Brexit trade talks was threatening the Good Friday Agreement.

"The Trump administration, State Department and the US Congress would all be aligned in the desire to see the Good Friday Agreement preserved to see the lack of a border maintained", Mr Mulvaney said in an interview with the Financial Times.

An EU spokesman insisted the 27-nation bloc was negotiating in good faith with the United Kingdom and had "literally hundreds" of worldwide deals with which to prove its reliability as a partner after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson insinuated the opposite. "We've been crystal clear all along, we're committed to it. Rest assured, we want to resolve the issues with our European partners, but there is not going to be any hard border [in Ireland], certainly not applied by the United Kingdom".

Raab is due to meet Pelosi during his USA visit, when Brexit and a future trade deal are expected to be discussed.

Biden also retweeted a letter from Eliot Engel, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, to Johnson calling on the British PM to honor the 1998 Good Friday peace deal.

"If I were him I would worry more about the need for a peace deal in the US to stop the killing and rioting before lecturing other sovereign nations", he said in reference to the violence that has engulfed the United States over the summer.

Speaking on CNN, Raab said: "The Good Friday Agreement is not in jeopardy".

A plan to give lawmakers a veto on using the powers had been put forward by a Conservative member of parliament, Bob Neill.

Pompeo for his part said he "had great confidence that they will get this right in a way that treats everyone fairly".

Former Brexit secretary David Davis suggested that Biden "talk to the EU", as he underscored that the only threat of an invisible border in Ireland would be if Brussels "insisted on levying tariffs".

Nile Gardiner, a fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, accused Biden of "recycling the anti-British talking points of the European Commission".

Joe Biden had warned on 16 September that Washington would only agree to a trade deal with Britain if the latter respected the Good Friday Agreement.

France warned against collapsing Brexit trade talks - a step it said could suit some in London.

European Union chief executive Ursula von der Leyen earlier said the divorce deal that allowed Britain to leave the bloc could not be "unilaterally changed, disregarded or misapplied".

It also doesn't hurt that the target in this case is the pro-Trump Johnson.

The U.K. withdrew from the EU's political institutions on January 31 but remains in a tariff-free transition period until the end of the year while negotiators work out the terms of a future trade relationship.

Johnson, by pursuing his current course on Brexit, will "dramatically weaken the case for this approach", Wright said.
