Google Play Store removes Paytm app for repeated policy violations

Breaking! Paytm removed from Google Play Store, here’s why

Google notes that apps can surely make a comeback to its store after they've fixed the flagged issues.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Paytm said, "Paytm Android app is temporarily unavailable on Google's Play Store for new downloads or updates".

"We are at the mercy of our gods at Google", he remarked.

The reason for the removal is not clear yet, but in a blog post the tech giant referred to their policies on gambling.

Paytm First Games is an all-in-one app made by Paytm for those who want to earn money playing these games online. The Paytm subsidiary came into much limelight recently by roping in cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador to help create awareness about the fantasy sports genre in the country.

The Android-maker, which maintains similar guidelines in most other markets, additionally noted that if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes is also in violation of its Play Store policies.

Paytm has reached out to its customers and stakeholders with a tweet, assuring that the app will back online soon. It seems that the developers failed to respond, leading Google to remove the app from its Play Store.

Earlier on Friday, Google posted a blog post that highlighted its gambling policy that doesn't allow app developers to facilitate sports betting.

"We have these policies to protect users from potential harm. All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal", it said. "Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently", the Google statement further added.

Google has removed Paytm and Paytm First Games on the allegations of running online casinos and allowing unregulated gambling.

Google's ban on Paytm and Paytm First Games comes just a day before the Indian Premier League 2020 is scheduled to kick off. Paytm is India's most valuable startup and claims over 50 million monthly active users. If Paytm fails to abide by Google's policy, it may face more serious action, including termination of its Google Play Developer accounts.
