Dangerfield, Reeve named 2020 WNBA rookie, coach of the year

Seattle Forward Breanna Stewart drives to the basket as Las Vegas center A’ja Wilson guards during the second quarter of a game last season

According to a release from the Lynx, Reeve received 25 votes from a national panel of 47 sportswriters and broadcasters. She is one of only two coaches to win over 60% of their regular season games (Chancellor, 65.5%) and has also recorded the most wins (40) and highest winning percentage (70.2%) in WNBA Playoff history.

Atlanta Dream guard Chennedy Carter, the fourth overall draft pick, was second with two votes. She then moved to the WNBA where she served stints as an assistant under Anne Donovan in Charlotte (2001-02, 2004-05) and Dan Hughes in Cleveland (2003), laying the foundation for an extremely successful four-year tenure as an assistant with Detroit under Bill Laimbeer, where she helped the Shock win WNBA Championships in 2006 and 2008.

Dangerfield started 19 of the final 20 games of the season for the Lynx, averaging 16.2 points and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 47% from the field and 92% from the free-throw line.

Wilson was informed of the honor by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert on Thursday in the league's bubble at IMG Sports Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Dangerfield said she was proud if she could be an inspiration to other players who weren't drafted in the first round. "What number you got drafted doesn't really matter when you step on the floor".

Dangerfield is the fifth Lynx player to win the award and second in a row following 2019 Rookie of the Year victor Napheesa Collier.

The 24-year-old is the first player from the franchise to win the award going back to when the team was in San Antonio and before that Utah.

"They try to make us grow up pretty quick there", Dangerfield said of UConn's success in preparing players for the pro ranks.

The Lynx finished the 2020 season with a 14-8 record and the fourth seed in the playoffs. "I think that if you asked both of us about MVP that's really not our concern". It's the third time that Reeve has won the award as she also earned it in 2011 and 2016. Minnesota faces Phoenix in the second round Thursday (ESPN2, 7 p.m. ET).
