Covid: Hong Kong asks Air India to suspend flights for 2 weeks

Hong Kong suspends Air India from operating flights till October 3

For the second consecutive time, Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department has suspended Air India flights after a few passengers on board the carrier tested positive for COVID-19 post arrival. "Only one flight was scheduled to operate in this period - Delhi-Hong Kong on Monday (September 21) which has been cancelled and passengers informed", said a senior AI official.

Last week Dubai's civil aviation authorities suspended the operations of Air India Express flights from September 18 to October 2 after the carrier was found to have flown passengers infected with COVID-19 to Dubai.

Hong Kong has also suspended Cathay Dragon flights till October 3 after flying in passengers infected with COVID-19.

Confirming the development, a spokesperson of the national carrier said,"Hong Kong has prohibited Air India for two weeks - September 20 to October 3".

Air India operates most worldwide flights now under the Vande Bharat Mission and under air bubble agreements with various countries, the official said adding that the SOPs should be strictly followed by the airline to avoid such lapses in the future. Only four local infections were reported. The country had earlier in August suspended flights of the national carrier after it was found to have carried covid-19 positive passengers on board its flights to the special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. The Vande Bharat Mission started in early May to evacuate Indians stranded overseas due to travel restrictions in wake of corona virus pandemic.

All global passengers are required to undergo a post-flight COVID-19 test at the Hong Kong airport. But, it seems that this is no working in. Last week Dubai aviation authorities had made a decision to suspend AI Express operations to the city for 15 days after the budget airline twice flew passengers with Covid positive reports there from India. As per the UAE government rules, each passenger travelling from India is required; to bring an original corona virus negative certificate; from the RT-PCR test done 96 hours prior to the journey.
