Brady’s Bucs debut a flop with 2 INTs; Saints win 34-23

Tom Brady picked off twice, including one for TD, in Tampa Bay Buccaneers debut

Brady tried to temper expectations this week, acknowledging that he still had work to do in learning Bruce Arians' offense, and the offense still had a ways to go when it came to communication and getting on the same page.

The 43-year-old superstar had a pick-six against the Saints, finishing 23 of 36 for 239 yards and two touchdowns, while he was sacked three times.

But while Brees avoided game-turning mishaps with an offense he's led since 2006, Brady suffered some costly cross-ups with his new team.

"Win the turnover battle like we did, have a turnover for a touchdown, you're a 90-something percent victor in those games", Saints coach Sean Payton said. "We made a few plays but, in the end, we're all going to wish we had a lot of plays back".

"We hung our defense out to dry on some short fields, not moving the ball, not doing very well on third down at certain times", Brady said.

'It's Week 1 of the National Football League season. It was also the third consecutive game going back to past year where Brady threw a pick-six in three straight games (including playoffs: against the Saints, the 2019 AFC Wild Card vs. the Tennessee Titans and Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins), according to ESPN Statistics & Information.

'We're going to feel that way as we move through the season.

There were some highlights, starting with the Bucs' opening possession.

He lofted a 26-yard completion to Chris Godwin along the right sideline, drew a pass interference penalty with a 22-yard attempt to Mike Evans and capped the drive with a 2-yard keeper, after which he emphatically spiked the ball off the turf.

Brady, who threw TD passes to O.J. Howard and Mike Evans in Tampa Bay's first game after the preseason schedule was scrapped amid the coronavirus pandemic, added: "It felt like a scrimmage out there". "We get to eat a piece of humble pie and get back at it next week". The legendary coach often would just say some version of "everyone needs to be better".
