The ministry announced, in a statement, that more than 41,000 people have visited the three hospitals since July 1.

The municipal Department of Health has enlisted around 600 medical students and 100 technicians to help with collecting Covid-19 samples in the city as it bids to stop community transmission of the novel coronavirus, said Ngo Thi Kim Yen, director of the Da Nang health department at a meeting Saturday.

Vietnam's health ministry on Saturday reported 40 new coronavirus cases, taking total infections in the country to 586, with three deaths.

Most of the new cases are linked to hospitals in Danang city, where the first locally transmitted infection in more than three months was detected last week.

Vietnam recorded 12 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday morning, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 558, according to its Ministry of Health.

State media says a 70-year-old man from the central city of Hoi An died from the virus, which he appears to have contracted in the popular holiday destination of Danang, per Reuters.

Since then almost 100 people who had travelled to Danang have tested positive across the country, leaving health authorities scrambling to snuff out the outbreak. Hanoi is expected to test about 21,000 people who declared that they had recently returned from Da Nang. "Since coming back, my family and I have quarantined ourselves at home". Other cases this week were confirmed in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other cities and provinces.

The health ministry also reported 45 new cases, which is the highest daily increase amid a recurrence of the virus. The city on Friday began setting up a makeshift hospital in a sports auditorium and doctors have been mobilized from other cities to help.

Vietnam has confirmed its first coronavirus fatality, state media reported, after the death of an elderly man who had tested positive in Danang.

Hoi An, an ancient town and top tourist destination known for its charming old houses 20 kilometres south of Da Nang, stopped allowing visitors on Friday because of the outbreak.
