U.S. Congress tackles COVID-19 fight

Epidemiologist Dr Anthony Fauci is one of the most trusted public figures in America

A Covid-19 related hearing on the Hill saw a vivid clash between GOP congressman Jim Jordan and Dr. Anthony Fauci over the risk of protests, while other Democrats and Republicans didn't miss the chance to score political points. "There's no reason to believe that we won't be able to develop a vaccine against it". "I do think it's really important to realize it's not public health versus the economy about school opening, it's public health versus public health of the K through 12 to get the schools open", he said.

More than 250,000 people have already registered their interest in participating in clinical trials, Fauci said.

"I'm not in a position to determine what the government can do in a forceful way", Fauci responded.

Fauci urged interested citizens to apply for trials on coronavirusprevention.org. "But no limit to protests, but, boy, you can't go to church on Sunday". Dr. Fauci said the two viruses can't be compared.

"Well, you make all kinds of recommendations".

"I'm not favouring anybody over anybody", Fauci replied. "You could ask me as much as you want, and I'm not going to answer it". "You should stay away from crowds, no matter where the crowds are". "If we tested less, there would be less cases".

Fauci answered questions from members of congress alongside US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield and Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Brett Giroir, MD.

But that argument has been challenged by numerous President's own health experts.

The latest government data shows about 75% of test results are coming back within 5 days, but the remainder are taking longer, Giroir told lawmakers.

Carlson has been critical of Fauci several times on his program, including earlier this week, calling him "a hypocritical buffoon". Some Trump supporters have urged the president to sack Fauci, and the president's tweet raised the stakes.

"This is the most complex public health response this nation has undertaken in more than a century", Redfield said. For mask wearers, there's also some evidence that they can offer a degree of protection from an infected person nearby.

President Trump resumed White House briefings on the coronavirus last week, though Fauci says he has yet to be invited. In comparison, some 95 percent of some European countries shut down. "We will come back STRONG!"

Reality check: The recent rise in COVID-19 cases was not just down to increased testing because the number of new infections has risen faster than the number of completed tests, Axios' Orion Rummler notes. He added that testing "assists in minimizing economic and social disruption". Growing numbers of emergency room visits, hospitalisations and deaths have followed as grim consequences.

Trump insisted the expert was wrong to say that cases are surging in the United States - despite the country surpassing 4,579,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 153,000 deaths as today. The White House medical expert said he was involved in and approved of all of the Trump administration's guidelines. At best, I think that claims to have a vaccine ready for sale before testing it are problematic.
