Red Cross pleads with recovered COVID-19 patients for plasma donations

President Trump asks recovered COVID-19 patients to donate plasma

The players of Miami Dolphins who have recovered from the coronavirus are now helping the patients who are still battling with the virus.

As COVID-19 cases surge across the country, the American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency shortage of convalescent plasma.

"I was surprised initially but was happy because I was presented with the opportunity to give back and donate plasma and help people in need", Perry said.

Those who have recovered from the coronavirus have been asked to donate convalescent plasma to help patients fight the virus.

"That would give people a lot of confidence, I think, to go back to school, go back to work", he told NPR, "because if someone gets sick it's not a tragedy - because we can protect them and protect those around them".

Shoham said he is also involved in a second study that will investigate whether plasma can prevent serious illness in people who are infected, but not sick.

To be eligible to donate convalescent plasma, individuals must meet all regular blood donor requirements of being in general good health and weighing at least 110 pounds, be completely symptom-free for at least 14 days and have a laboratory-confirmed test for COVID-19.

OneBlood is a not-for-profit blood center responsible for providing safe, available and affordable blood to more than 250 hospital partners and their patients throughout Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

The organization described the usefulness of the plasma in a statement saying that the patient is transfused with the donor's plasma with the goal of using the donor's antibodies to help clear the virus more rapidly and help decrease the need for ICU beds and ventilators.
