Researchers in South Korea recently published a study looking at disease transmission in children and young adults, finding that those between 10 and 19 years old transmitted the disease just as frequently as adults, although children under nine were found to transmit COVID-19 less frequently, CNN reports.
"Thus, young children can potentially be important drivers of SARS-CoV-2 spread in the general population, as has been demonstrated with respiratory syncytial virus, where children with high viral loads are more likely to transmit", the researchers explained in the study.
"It's concerning the youngest individuals were the ones with the highest amount of virus", said lead researcher Dr. Taylor Heald-Sargent, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago.
The authors included that a current laboratory study had actually shown that the more viral hereditary product existed, the more contagious virus might be grown.
The study was based on 145 participants with mild to moderate illness.
Heald-Sargent said the "behavioral habits" of very young children - for example, the lack of awareness of personal space and personal hygiene, all the fidgeting, hands-on play, and wiping of eyes and noses - make it hard to control any potential spread, but it's important to try. "This data would argue against that".
Older children and adults had similar amounts of the virus' genetic material in their noses, the study found, while kids under 5 years old had anywhere between 10 to 100 times more virus in their upper respiratory tract than adults and older children. "It would be logical they can also spread the virus or transmit the virus".
Samples collected from younger children generally had lower CTs, meaning they had more virus present in their samples from the beginning.
According to the CDC, just 7% of U.S. One hundred forty-five patients were separated into three groups according to their ages.
But they added that earlier research on pediatric cases of COVID-19 pointed to a correlation between higher viral nucleic acid levels and the ability to culture infectious virus.
Most notably, only 33 percent of the cohort studied required hospitalization during the course of their COVID-19 infection.
It could be that children don't get as sick and therefore don't cough as much, spreading airborne virus, Adalja said. On the other hand, the CTs observed in the samples of adults and older children were more comparable.
Heald-Sargent, who has young children of her own, dismissed the latter idea.
"A lot of the epidemiologic surveys have been done in a period of social distancing and isolation, where schools were shut down quite early and day cares as well", Heald-Sargent said.
May have a long-term impact on the health of people who have recovered from the illness. "They were the ones at work and going to the store".
"There is evidence now that the virus can directly attack heart muscle cells, and there's also evidence that the cytokine storm that the virus triggers in the body not only damages the lungs, but can damage the heart", says Swartzberg, who did not work on either of these new studies. The average price of pre-school care has increased over the past year, sending child care prices to an average of GBP200 in parts of the southeast.
