Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley opts out of 2020 National Football League season

Jets LB C.J. Mosley opts out of 2020 season

After signing as a free agent prior to 2019, Mosley played just two games in his first season in NY, missing 14 games due to a severe groin injury.

As for Mosley's contract, he still has four years left on the five-year, $85 million contract he signed in 2019. ESPN first reported Mosley's decision. That means the Jets will have control of him through the 2024 season. They traded All-Pro safety Jamal Adams to the Seahawks last Saturday, and now Mosley is gone.

In a span of a week, the Jets have lost their top two players on defense. After playing in parts of just two games in his first season with the Jets, he has already made $29 million off his monster deal.

Dont'a Hightower, Nate Solder and Damien Williams are among the biggest names to opt out.

His contract will toll, meaning it will be pushed back one season. Mosley has four 100-plus-tackle seasons on his resume. He acknowledged he still wasn't totally healthy in that game, and missed the rest of the season before eventually having surgery in December.

So for the second straight campaign, the Jets' front seven will need to compensate for the absence of Mosley.

According to Over The Cap, Mosley was supposed to have a 2020 cap hit of $17.5 million, but it will now be $10 million, which was his roster bonus. He finished last season on injured reserve with a groin/core injury and was cleared to return this season with no limitations as an anchor of the Jets defense. He was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list earlier this week but is expected to be ready to play when the regular season begins. His decision is final, per the league's opt-out rules.
