Ireland to play six internationals in Autumn window

The World Rugby Council has approved a temporary adjustment to Regulation 9 to allow the release of worldwide players for the revised windows.

The World Rugby Council have also cleared the way for the Rugby Championship to take place in the southern hemisphere for six weeks from November.

The All Blacks and Springboks still seem set for regular contact.

The temporary global window will accommodate the completion of the 2020 men's and women's Six Nations championships on October 24 and 31, a rest weekend on November 7 and four consecutive rounds of worldwide matches. It's common knowledge that SANZAAR are looking at hosting the entire tournament in New Zealand.

Further issues could arise in South Africa after newly appointed Springbok coach Jacques Nienarber mentioned that the Springboks would not play in the Rugby Championship if they hadn't had at least six rounds of domestic rugby under their belt.

"These matches will be greatly anticipated by all, and I would like to thank unions, the global and club competitions and players for their input and the fans for their patience as we have sought to get worldwide rugby back up and running".

The weekend of 7 November will be a rest, followed by four consecutive weekends of internationals.

With no major rugby since March and national unions in deepening debt, World Rugby has enlarged the window from 24 October to the second weekend of December.

Andy Farrell's side are expected to take on Italy in Dublin on Saturday 24 October and then travel to France for the final round of games a week later when Italy will host England and Wales face Scotland. Whether spectators are allowed to attend depends on health protocols in each country.

World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said: "Throughout this process, all parties have sought to deliver the best possible outcome to support the interests of global and club rugby and the players".

World Rugby added it was also talking with Tier Two unions about helping them to put together fixtures where Covid-19 restrictions permit.
