Hundreds of kids infected with coronavirus within days at overnight camp — CDC

Per the CDC, 597 individuals - including campers and both teen and adult staffers - attended the camp in June.

The CDC said in its report that the camp, "adhered to the measures in Georgia's Executive Order that allowed overnight camps to operate beginning on May 31, including requiring all trainees, staff members, and campers to provide documentation of a negative viral SARS-CoV-2 test (less than or equal to) 12 days before arriving".

That very same day, the camp began to send people home and alerted the state's Department of Public Health the next day before shutting down on June 27.

Some of the transmission was likely asymptomatic, with 26% of attendees for whom symptom data was available reporting none.

"This investigation adds to the body of evidence demonstrating that children of all ages are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and, contrary to early reports, might play an important role in transmission", Szablewski and colleagues wrote.

Several days after the camp began, a teenage staff member developed chills and left the camp.

President Trump's repeated statements that children are "almost immune" to COVID-19 got a fact check from state and federal public health investigators examining an outbreak at a Georgia summer camp. The following day, she was tested for coronavirus and reported a positive result, according to the report.

Staff members were required to wear cloth face masks.

The attack rate is the total number of new cases divided by the total at-risk population.

Research into the transmission of the virus remains ongoing, the CDC said.

The CDC mentioned that on June 17, employee got here for a four-day orientation for at an overnight summer camp unknown by the report.

Campers ranged in age from 6 to 19, and numerous staffers were teenagers.

After that, the camp was quickly disbanded and it closed on June 27.

Many camp activities - which took place indoors as well as outdoors - included "vigorous singing and cheering", which can enhance spread of the virus, the report said.

Given the increasing incidence of COVID-19 in Georgia in June and July, some cases might have resulted from transmission occurring before or after camp attendance.

The odds that a camper would be "attacked" by the virus "increased with increasing length of time spent at the camp", the researchers said.

Of the 344 available testing results, 76% were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Those who did experience symptoms most commonly had a fever, followed by a headache and a sore throat.

South Africa, which has so far reported 482, 169 confirmed COVID-19 positive cases, is Africa's highest affected country in terms of positive cases, followed by Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria and Morocco, it was noted.

While the researchers said "consistent and correct" use of cloth masks, as well as physical distancing measures, should be emphasized to mitigate transmission in "congregate settings", they acknowledged that "the multiple measures adopted by the camp were not sufficient to prevent an outbreak in the context of substantial community transmission".
