Giorgi rallies to reach Palermo semifinals

Prediction and head to head Fiona Ferro vs. Sara Errani

Croatian Petra Martic, first seed, qualified this Thursday for the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Palermo (Italy) by beating the Russian Liudmila Samsonova with a comeback.

Martic converted a break point late in the second set to move within one game of Kontaveit but a medical timeout halted her momentum.

Yastremska served for the match at 6-4, 5-4 when she squandered two chances to advance. "She's not the type of player I like to play".

"The struggle was real out there today", Martic said after the two-and-a-half hour match.

The Croatian will next meet fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit, who overcame Italian teenager Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, reports Xinhua news agency.

The tournament is the first in five months since the Tour was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Martic said she felt the effects of not playing competitive tennis for so long. I'm really happy with how I fought in the third set and that I managed to turn it around in the end. "I had some good weeks of practice and it's paying off". The Frenchwoman won nine of the final ten games to wrap up the match in 88 minutes.

Giorgi got past seventh seed Dayana Yastremska 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 after saving two match points, while Ferro brushed past Italian veteran Sara Errani 6-4 6-1.

"It was more mental, the match, because I was very close always", Giorgi said. 29-year-old Martic jumps to 9-5 on the season and will face Kontaveit in the semis.
