First astronaut launch from United States soil in nearly a decade

The next window for the launch is Saturday, May 30 at 3:22 PM EDT (12:22 PM PDT). NASA's Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are headed to the International Space Station and will become the first astronauts to launch from the USA since 2011, NPR reports.

The launch will take place at Florida's Kennedy Space Center, and it's scheduled for just after 4:30 p.m.

SpaceX's landmark launch to the International Space Station was postponed Wednesday due to poor weather with around 20 minutes to go until takeoff. SpaceX is the first from this program to make a crewed launch attempt.

This launch of SpaceX's first crewed mission will put an end to NASA's nine-year hiatus in human spaceflight.

NASA and SpaceX on Saturday successfully launched the Elon Musk-led company's Falcon 9 rocket carrying two NASA astronauts aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft in a picture-perfect liftoff this afternoon from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. But now, based on the Demo-2 mission, the Crew Dragon Capsule will be able to earn regular astronaut shuttle missions to the International Space Station. Today's launch will also mark the first time in history that a commercial aerospace company will carry humans into Earth's orbit, a milestone NASA and space fans have been looking forward to for almost a decade.

Meanwhile, SpaceX has already begun plans to also offer berths on Crew Dragon to private citizens and potentially commercial scientists and other passengers.
