Eastern Ontario jobless rate up for fourth straight month

Canada Outpaces U.S. Recouping 55% of Jobs Lost to Pandemic

Part-time gains have outpaced full-time work in each of the past three months, Statistics Canada noted, with 345,000 more positions in July compared to an increase in full-time jobs of 73,000.

Out of the country's major cities, Calgary has the highest employment rate with 15.5 per cent. It found South Asian, Arab, and Black Canadians had the highest unemployment rates in July.

The unemployment rate in Alberta and Canada has dropped for the first time since March. Statistics Canada said almost 30 per cent of people working less than 30 hours a week in July would have preferred full-time work, an increase from the 22.2 per cent recorded one year earlier.

Meanwhile, Canada as a whole saw a bigger dip in the unemployment rate, which now sits at 10.9 per cent for July, down 1.4 per cent for the second consecutive month and down from a record high of 13.7 per cent in May.

"By the week of July 12 to July 18, the total number of affected workers stood at 2.3 million, a reduction since April of 58.0%", reads the Statistics Canada report.

Construction added 600 new jobs from the previous month, as did the sector covering food and accomodations. "Monthly employment data, historically among the leading market movers in foreign exchange, has been relatively toothless of late", said Don Curren, market strategist and content editor, at Cambridge Global Payments.

Ontario-wide employment is at 91.7 per cent of pre-pandemic February levels. In B.C., the number of employed people increased by 70,000 in July.

Although employment rose faster among women (3.4 per cent) compared to men (1.5 per cent), men are still closer to being back at pre-pandemic levels of employment.

For those who are not a visible minority or Aboriginal - in essence, white people - the jobless rate was 9.3 per cent in July.
