Coronavirus: How is Victoria's lockdown affecting you?

Stage 4 restrictions apply to metropolitan Melbourne only.

'These changes going to stage four in Melbourne and stage three in regional Victoria will mean we go from 700,000 students learning remotely to around 1 million students learning remotely, their parents and carers not moving around the community, and teachers and staff are working predominantly from home as well, ' he said.

We want to hear how this harsher lockdown is affecting you.

Mr Andrews said the restrictions will run for six weeks versus a slower strategy discussed that would take up to six months.

"As heartbreaking as it is to close down places of employment. that is what we have to do in order to stop the spread of this wildly infectious virus", Victoria's state premier Daniel Andrews told a news conference.

'We can suspend various acts of the parliament and make sure that we get the job done and there's no question about the enforceability and the way in which new rules will operate'.

The new rules will remain in place until at least September 13, and Andrews promised more changes would be coming as well, the BBC reported. That is what these decisions are about'.

Melbourne residents will only be allowed to shop and exercise within 5 kilometres of their homes.

"We can not have a situation that this continues to grow and grow in regional Victoria, and then we have a situation where we perhaps bring stability and reduced numbers to metropolitan Melbourne, but we have a problem that is even larger and spreads across regional Victoria".

Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson said those strict protocols, that included the banning of all bar essential personnel from race meetings and trackwork, were a key reason the industry was able to continue during an unprecedented period of public restrictions.

Mr Andrews said businesses such as supermarkets, butchers, bakers will not be impacted and there is no need to panic buy at these retail outlets.

"If you've got that many cases - and they're not just in metropolitan Melbourne, they're in regional Victoria as well - if you have that many cases of community transmission you must assume you have even more and on that basis you can no longer be confident that you've got a precise understanding of how much virus is there", Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said during a press briefing.

The state reported 429 new cases today, down from 671 new infections yesterday, but 13 more deaths was the second highest daily death toll.

Six of the deaths were connected to the age care sector.

Seventy-three of the new cases are linked to known outbreaks while 598 remain under investigation.
