Commissioner Warns MLBPA of Shutdown if Virus Cannot Be Contained

Big Week For Baseball 30 teams 30 thoughts and the ripple effect of outbreaks

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has threatened to shut down the season if the league doesn't do a better job of managing coronavirus, ESPN reported Friday.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday that two players tested positive for coronavirus in testing that was done before their Wednesday game against the Minneapolis Twins.

Manfred, who has the power to shut down the season, reportedly made this comment to MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark.

Several teams have had games postponed due to the outbreak among the ballplayers.

With 29 positive tests this past week, 21 of which came from the Marlins organization alone, Major League Baseball is facing the first in a possible season-long barrage of postponements.

The Phillies have been able to work out only once since Sunday's game against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.

Because of the shortened nature of the season and the way the schedule has been affected just a week in, Manfred reiterated to Clark the importance of following protocols.

The latest game postponed was Milwaukee's home opener against St. Louis, scrapped hours before the first pitch after two Cardinals players tested positive. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

"Some things aren't looking too good right now, but we have to play up to that point".

The silver lining to this ticking time bomb is that only eight of 11,895 total tests this past week came back positive for organizations other than the Marlins, with only two of those being players.

Marlins players left their hotel to go out at night while in Atlanta on July 21 and 22, Miller reports. The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees have also needed to change their schedules as part of the collateral damage. The Marlins were hit with a virus outbreak in Philadelphia, and both Miami and the Phillies are sidelined for at least a week.
