Canada's Salmonella Onion Situation Is Growing With Another New Brand Recalled

The initiative includes seven items sold in Walmart and Kroger stores in several states, the FDA said in a Thursday notice.

The CDC said the infections were traced to onions from Thomson International Inc.in Bakersfield, Calif.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall Thursday, citing concerns that the products made with yellow and green onions could be contaminated by salmonella.

Suppliers and Distributors: Suppliers, distributors, and others in the supply chain should not use, ship, or sell recalled onions from Thomson International, Inc. or food products containing recalled onions.

Red and jumbo onions sold under the "Freshpoint Foodservice" brand are also covered by the warning.

And, as of August 7, 2020, there have been 239 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport illness linked to this outbreak in the following Canadian provinces: British Columbia (67), Alberta (149), Saskatchewan (5), Manitoba (13), Ontario (3), Quebec (1) and Prince Edward Island (1).

Don't eat, buy, sell or cook with any red onions if they were grown in the United States.

If you can not tell if your onion is part of the recall, or your food product contains recalled onions, you should not eat, sell, or serve it, and should throw it out.


If you don't know where the onions in your pantry originally came from, it's time to throw them in the trash. If there isn't one, don't take a chance.

Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce. Experts say that, if you aren't sure, you should toss any onions you have.

If you're unsure, you can contact the place you bought them from to get more information.

Restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, hospitals and nursing homes should take special precautions in order to ensure they are not using the affected onions.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection typically start six to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria from an infected animal, person or contaminated product.

With the onion recall of 2020, Canada has added another brand to the list of affected products.

Salmonellosis, the illness caused by infection with Salmonella, can cause diarrhea, fever, chills, abdominal discomfort and vomiting.
