Big 12-approved scheduling model includes 9 conference games, 1 nonconference game

The Mountaineer players celebrate a win with their fans

The schedule also comes with some flexibility that will allow the Big 12 championship game to be delayed as many as two weeks in December, if the conference needs extra time to make up any regular-season games that might get postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The league presidents decided on a plus-one model Monday night in which teams would play nine conference games and one nonconference game at home, the conference announced. A specific start date for conference play was not determined.

Over the last month, as BYU has seen its once-strong 2020 football schedule dwindle down to only six possible games, the murmurings of how to salvage the season have focused on a possible single-season conference agreement.

"We believe this change provides the best opportunity going forward", Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a release.

On Monday afternoon Michigan State's current week one opponent Northwestern announced they would be shutting down football workouts due to a positive COVID test. MSU's football team is now nearing the end of a 14-day quarantine resulting from a small outbreak amongst the team.

The conference has yet to solidify plans on the season's start date, but the conference announced it anticipates the first games being played in mid- or late-September. Unlike other Power Five conference that have switched to either exclusively (Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC) or mostly (ACC) league games, the Big 12 could not add more conference games without teams playing each other a few times.

KU also had three: August 29 at home vs. The Pac-12 followed a day later. The Big 12 is the only power five conference to not eliminate any potential football opponents.

The ACC already had brought into doubt the chances of KU facing Boston College in Lawrence on September 19, once the ACC said its teams wouldn't play nonconference games out of state.
