Biden Risks Alienating Young Black Voters After Race Remarks

Whitmer, who's always been on Mr. Biden's shortlist, is the first candidate known to have interviewed with Biden in person, according to The Washington Post.

Former Vice President Joe Biden's vice presidential vetting process appears to be entering its final stages, as the presumptive Democratic nominee has begun to hold interviews with prospective candidates.

Whitmer traveled to DE, as first reported by The Associated Press, for Biden's first known in-person meeting with a potential running mate.

A spokesperson for Whitmer also declined to weigh in on the report, telling ABC News "We don't discuss the governor's personal schedule".

Should Biden pick a woman and win the November election, his running mate would be the first woman to serve as vice president in the US.

Flight records show a chartered flight left Lansing's Capital Region International Airport for Delaware Coastal Airport at 5:33 p.m. last Sunday and returned at 11:16 p.m., writes David Eggert of AP.

Close to a dozen women have been thought to be candidates for Biden's running mate this summer. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif. Tammy Duckworth are reportedly legitimate candidates, as well, according to reports. "We're going to have a Black woman VP". Some conservatives have smeared those calls.

Whitmer, the governor of a battleground state, deepened her national profile after delivering the Democrats' response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.

Former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice earlier this week said that she was well-positioned as a potential pick since she had far-reaching experience dealing with public health crises under Obama. That pressure follows a campaign-reviving win in SC due in part to strong support from African American voters and has been compounded by nationwide protests over racial inequality in the wake of the death of George Floyd, who was killed in Minneapolis police custody in May.

The process to select Biden's running mate has taken longer than expected.
