Reiner wrote four volumes of memoirs, including "I Just Remembered" in 2014, as well as children's books. Originally, Reiner had developed the series with himself in mind to star in the lead role, though the network opted to recast the part and give the sitcom's starring role to Dick Van Dyke. He created the Dick Van Dyke Show and worked with Sid Caesar and Mel Brooks along the way.
Carl Reiner, the comedy actor and creator whose career spanned eight decades, has died at the age of 98.
His son, actor-director Rob Reiner, confirmed the loss Tuesday on Twitter. He was known for his work in Caesar's 1950s troupe, as the snarling, toupée-wearing Alan Brady of The Dick Van Dyke Show and in such films as The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. "He was my guiding light".
Though Reiner made some notable on-screen appearances, his career was largely based behind the camera as a writer, director and producer. After joining the service's performing unit, Reiner broke into showbiz after hostilities finished, landing a spot on Your Show of Shows in 1950, where he would collaborate with the likes of Brooks and Neil Simon.
Reiner's theatrical career began in 1947 when he was cast in the revue Call Me Mister.
"When we were doing "The 2000 Year Old Man" together there was no better straight man in the world", Brooks said. Joseph Stein adapted Reiner's autobiographical novel Enter Laughing into a play, and later turned it into the musical So Long, 174th Street.

In what would become a momentous collaboration, Reiner was asked by then-white-hot stage and TV comic Steve Martin to direct his debut film, and the 1979 film The Jerk was the result.
"The Van Dyke show is probably the most thrilling of my accomplishments, because that was very, very personal", Reiner once said.
Comedians Mel Brooks, left, and Reiner pose with their Grammy Awards for best spoken comedy album on February 24, 1999, in Los Angeles. He recounted his childhood and creative journey in the 2013 book, I Remember Me.
"My friend Carl Reiner died last night". In more recent years, Reiner had a recurring role as Saul Bloom in Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Ocean's Thirteen.
