Max Domi to delay decision on playing against Pittsburgh

Montreal Quebec CAN Montreal Canadiens forward Max Domi is checked into the boards during the second perio

The NHL is set to return on August 1 with a 24-team playoff format following the coronavirus-enforced break and the Canadiens are taking a cautious to Domi's health.

In several interviews during the pandemic, Domi has expressed his desire to play this summer but his participation is also dependent on the National Hockey League giving him a medical clearance.

Domi had 17 goals and 27 assists in 71 games this season. Players have until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to exercise their right to opt out of the tournament without penalty.

Alzner, 31, played four games for the Canadiens this season, posting a minus-one rating with zero points and four shots.

Alzner and his $4.625 million cap hit have been parked in Laval for most of the past two seasons, but he was recalled in February after Victor Mete suffered a broken foot. The Canadiens will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in their best-of-five play-in series. The roster also includes defense prospect Alexander Romanov, who is not yet under contract and is expected to sign his entry-level deal on Monday at noon, when the signing period opens.

With Alzner's status confirmed, that leaves just Max Domi and Brett Kulak as players yet to arrive at the Habs' practice facility.
