Jimmie Johnson is 'blown away' by positive COVID-19 test, is asymptomatic

Johnson said the most hard thing to cope with right now may be the fact that he and his wife have tested positive while his children are negative and trying to manage parenting around that dynamic.

Hendrick Motorsports said Justin Allgaier will drive the No. 48 Chevrolet on Sunday as Johnson's replacement. I'm hopeful I can are able to come back and run a Hendrick Cup vehicle in a few races.

"Jimmie has handled this situation like the champion he is", said Rick Hendrick.

"I know our country and the planet right now is finished quarantine and over all these technicalities we must deal with, but as a family group that has been very safe and incredibly cautious, it shows how diligent you truly have to be through all of this".

Hendrick Motorsports said it has implemented detailed procedures to protect its team, including daily screenings at team facilities, separating facility operations and traveling personnel, dividing work schedules, strict face covering and social distancing rules and an increase in disinfecting and sanitizing of all work areas.

Harvick, meanwhile, will attempt to win a second consecutive Brickyard, and a win on Indy's oval would tie NASCAR's points leader with Hamlin, the Daytona 500 victor, at four wins each.

The late scratch also stops Johnson's incredible consecutive race streak - he's started every single Cup Series race since 2002's Daytona 500.

"Clearly, I also provide this fascination with IndyCar, sports cars as well as other forms of racing".

"Jimmie is a true battle-tested champion, and we wish him well in his recovery", a NASCAR statement said.

It was Harvick's fourth win since NASCAR returned from the COVID-19 hiatus on May 17 at Darlington Raceway.

Johnson was tested early on Friday after he learned that his wife had tested positive for the virus, and received his own positive result shortly after.

But it frequently grants waivers to drivers that do miss races and said Friday afternoon that Johnson would get a waiver. He is 10th all-time with 84 combined wins between NASCAR's Cup Series and Xfinity Series.

Johnson would either need to win a race before the playoffs or be high enough in the points standings to make the 16-driver field. The once frosty schism between the two biggest racing series in the United States has thawed and NASCAR's elite Cup Series will share a venue with IndyCar on the same weekend for the first time in history. Johnson watched the race from his Colorado home as the series' longest active streak of consecutive and fifth-longest in series history ended at 663.

Johnson, 44, had announced last fall that the 2020 season would be his last as a fulltime driver in NASCAR.
