Hawaii bracing for rain, wind, surf impacts from major Hurricane Douglas

Forecasters say any location across the state may feel impacts from Hurricane Douglas

The utility is preparing to move crews and equipment to areas most likely to be affected-with forecasts now showing impacts to Hawaii island as early as Saturday night and other isles Sunday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center projects it will weaken into a tropical storm by Sunday night.

"It is pretty frequent for hurricanes to track towards Hawaii, but they commonly dissipate or at minimum weaken considerably ahead of impacting the islands", Phil Klotzbach, a analysis scientist at Colorado Condition College, said. Maui county includes the islands of including Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe.

Gov. David Ige of Hawaii on Thursday issued a pre-landfall emergency proclamation, which authorized the spending of state funds for quick and efficient disaster relief. Douglas is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes and three of those six developing into major hurricanes.

Gonzalo, which became a tropical storm on Wednesday, was about 445 miles east of the southern Windward Islands and was moving west at 18 m.p.h., the center said.

At the moment the forecast map above shows that hurricane Douglas is targeting the Hawaiian island of Maui, but with a day or two to track that could change and the Big Island is not yet clear of any Douglas landfall threat.

Mr. Feltgen said it appeared that Gonzalo would not reach hurricane strength, noting that the storm's winds had decreased to 45 miles per hour. Hurricane conditions are possible on Oahu Sunday night, with tropical storm conditions possible Sunday. Hurricane conditions are possible over Maui county Sunday, with tropical storm conditions possible beginning late Saturday night.

SURF: Large swells generated by Douglas are expected to affect the Hawaiian Islands this weekend. "There is an increasing chance that strong winds, risky surf, and heavy rainfall could affect portions of the state beginning Saturday night or Sunday". The hurricane centre forecast among 6 to 10 inches of rain for parts of the islands with isolated greatest totals of 15 inches are probable, in particular in increased terrain.

Meanwhile, forecasters said Douglas is more likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions for several days. This rain may result in life-threatening flash flooding and land slides.
