Gilead Sciences plans to begin in August human trials of an inhaled version of remdesivir, an antiviral drug that has been shown to treat COVID-19 patients, the biotechnology company announced Monday. America's is already conducting one such study with the anti-inflammatory arthritis drug known as baricitinib, which is made by Eli Lilly.
The other lot will be supplied to Kolkata, Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Vijayawada, Cochin, Trivandrum and Goa within a week, it added. A National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) randomized, controlled trial reportedly showed the drug shortened recovery time by an average of four days, and Gilead's SIMPLE study of moderate patients showed better clinical outcomes with a five-day remdesivir course than those receiving standard of care.
Cipla and Hetero Labs have already entered into non-exclusive licensing agreements with U.S. pharma giant Gilead Sciences, which is the patent holder of the drug Remdesivir. It will not be retailed, PTI reported quoting Hetero Group of Companies MD Vamsi Krishna Bandi.
Cipla will be marketing and supplying the drug through both government and open market channels, the company said in a statement.
"The US drug regulator issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Gilead Sciences Inc. for emergency use of Remdesivir for the treatment of hospitalized 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients".
