China hit with United States visa restrictions over Hong Kong Security Laws

Hong Kong

But Beijing officials rebuffed the criticism of the law at a press conference.

Luo Huining, the head of Beijing's top representative office in Hong Kong, said at the ceremony the law was a "common aspiration" of Hong Kong citizens.

In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson offered UK visas to up to three million Hong Kong citizens due to new security legislation.

"[China] promised 50 years of freedom to the Hong Kong people, and gave them only 23", he said, adding further USA countermeasures would be announced.

"The Chinese Communist Party's decision to impose draconian national security legislation on Hong Kong destroys the territory's autonomy and one of China's greatest achievements", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said.

This time, Beijing took no chances. A total of 24 Korean names in banking, brokerage, asset management and insurance have so far entered Hong Kong, and many of them now are reviewing to move their operation to Singapore.

In passing the law in Beijing, China is making clear its legal system is paramount.

The end of Hong Kong self-governance?

Hong Kong's "One Country, Two Systems" formula helped cement the city's status as a world-class business hub, bolstered by an independent judiciary and political freedoms unseen on the mainland.

As hundreds of protesters gathered downtown for an annual rally marking the 23rd anniversary of the former British colony's handover to China, riot police used pepper spray to arrest at least two people, while one metro station was closed.

There is concern in Hong Kong that the prohibition of "terrorist activity" will be applied broadly and arbitrarily. "The [national security law] opens up a window into widespread interference in people's lives and potentially penetrates into a lot of activities that contribute to a lot of the vibrancy of civil society and the character of this financial center".

The Chinese and Hong Kong flags are released during the flag-raising ceremony.

"The United States will not stand idly by while China swallows Hong Kong into its authoritarian maw", he said, adding that the United States has already taken a number of actions in response, which include imposing visa restrictions on CCP officials for eroding Hong Kong's autonomy and freedoms, revoking Hong Kong's special trading status, and imposing similar export restrictions on the city as it does on China on USA defense and dual-use technologies.

Beijing must also allow the United Nations rights chief meaningful access to its western Xinjiang province, said the states - including Britain, France, Germany and Japan - in a rare oral rebuke of China at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"We are convinced that this move is conducive to ensure "one country, two systems" is steady and enduring, and that Hong Kong enjoys long term prosperity and stability".

China has said it will impose visa restrictions on Americans it sees as interfering over Hong Kong.

The legislation has now been passed and is now in force in Hong Kong.

Police said in a message displayed on a purple banner: "You are displaying flags or banners/chanting slogans/or conducting yourselves with an intent such as secession or subversion, which may constitute offences under the. national security law". On Tuesday morning, as Hong Kong outlets began reporting the law had passed, Lam refused to comment, saying that it would be "inappropriate" to do so given the legislative body was still meeting in Beijing. "The eyes of the world will remain on Hong Kong".

And mere hours after the national security bill was approved, at least two opposition political parties announced they had effectively dissolved themselves.
