On Monday, it was announced the Chiefs have agreed to a 10-year contract extension with QB Patrick Mahomes that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2031 season. That means Mahomes will be in with the Chiefs until he's 36 years old, well through the prime of his career.
Schefter included in follow up tweets that this 10-year deal adds on to Mahomes' current two-year contract.
The Chiefs had said they meant to sign their franchise quarterback to an extension but had previously indicated it might not happen until after this season.
Mahomes inspired the Chiefs to victory over the San Francisco 49ers as MVP at February's Super Bowl LIV in Miami, following on from his league MVP award in 2018. He finished 26-of-42 for 286 yards with three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing), two interceptions and a 78.6 passer rating. The last time a quarterback signed a 10-year extension in the National Football League was 2004, when Michael Vick signed a 10-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
