Alberta reports five new cases of COVID-19 in RMWB

A crowd gathers at one of seven stages set up for the Calgary Folk Fest

Alberta is doubling the number of people who can gather at an outdoor event from 100 to 200, officials announced Tuesday.

The change applies to outdoor events like performances, festivals, fireworks displays and sporting events.

The new maximum is only in effect for audience-type community events.

Indoor gathering and seated events remain at prescribed limits.

"We are making this shift based on several factors, including an analysis of how the virus is spreading in Alberta and the reduced risk of gatherings held outdoors".

All public health measures, including physical distancing, remain in place, the province notes in a release.

The province reported five new cases of COVID-19 in the RMWB in the last 24 hours.

Hinshaw also pointed out two regions - one each in Calgary and Edmonton - were put on the watch list for having more than 50 active COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population: Edmonton Mill Woods West and Calgary Centre.

As of Monday, there are 41 people in hospital due to COVID-19, including nine requiring intensive care.

Hinshaw will be providing an update on the province's response to COVID-19 later today. Within the Peace Country, there remains one case in the City of Grande Prairie, one in Big Lakes County, one in the MD of Smoky River, and one in Clear Hills County.
