United States could reach 100,000 new virus cases a day, Fauci says

Dr. Anthony Fauci testifies before the Senate alongside public health officials and members of the White House coronavirus task force

"Dr. Fauci, based on what you are seeing now, how many Covid-19 deaths and infections should America expect before this is all over?" asked Warren during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on the pandemic, prompting Dr. Fauci to reply, "I can't make an accurate prediction, but it is going to be disturbing, I guarantee you that".

As cases in many states continue to climb, infection rates in the Northeast have been declining, including in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey and NY.

Three coronavirus vaccines should undergo clinical trials in the new few months, but Fauci is anxious about making sure the drug is effective enough, "The best we've ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective", said Fauci.

Drs. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Stephen Hahn, Food and Drug Administration commissioner, and Adm. Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services, also testified.

Redfield singled out younger Americans in particular to convey a message that they are not exempt from the need to wear a mask.

More than 2.5 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the United States and more than 125,000 have died of COVID-19, the respiratory illness it causes, according to a Reuters tally.

During an interview Saturday, the coronavirus task force member said many people took an "all or nothing" approach to distancing guidelines by either completely locking down or ignoring guidelines entirely. Texas and Florida purchased the closure of all their bars on Friday.

Health officials across the U.S. have expressed growing concern about the nation's ability and willingness to slow or end the coronavirus pandemic. Rand Paul (R-KY) warned listeners not to put too much stock in the opinion of government health experts who "we, like sheep, blindly follow". 'I can say this is under critical review right now by us at CDC.

"That's why I've suggested that the president occasionally wear a mask", Alexander said.

Earlier this month, Fauci told the Journal of the American Medical Association there are four or five trials underway for vaccine candidates, and he expects the USA will have millions of doses of a vaccine by year's end.

"I think there was a lot of wishful thinking around the country that, "hey it's summer".

Last week, American Airlines said it plans to begin selling every seat on flights, something it has not done since the pandemic struck this spring.

In Capitol Hill's latest round of aid, Congress increased unemployment checks by $ 600 per week and added 13 weeks of pay, beyond what the states offer.

Medford added that he felt Fauci's concerns were well-founded, given the likelihood that a coronavirus vaccine will not be 100 percent effective and the fact that most polls find a substantial percentage of Americans would resist getting vaccinated.
