Richard Sherman: Cam Newton's Patriots deal is 'ridiculous'

Cam Newton and Larry Fitzgerald after the 2015 NFC Championship game

Reports on Sunday indicated Newton and the New England Patriots had reached an agreement on a one-year contract for the 2020 season.

As part of an alumni poll by The Athletic in May, former Panthers were asked where they thought Cam Newton would end up. Throw in a quality defense with the best secondary in the league and New England is suddenly right back where we're used to, among the most intriguing teams in the AFC. "Just ridiculous. A transcendent talent and less talented QBs are getting 15/16m a year".

The 2015 NFL MVP reportedly had "brief" discussions with the Cleveland Browns - presumably to act as Baker Mayfield's backup - but negotiations between the two parties quickly fizzled out.

So does the Newton deal make the Patriots an obvious choice to win the AFC East yet again? Jeff Howe of The Athletic has Newton ready to compete for the starting job and could put the Patriots back into the contenders category. His prove-it deal with the Patriots could lead to big money in free agency next year if he plays well and the Lisfranc fracture that limited him to two games in 2019 doesn't burden his season.
