Opening Of Super Nintendo World Delayed Indefinitely Due To COVID-19

Universal Studios Japan to delay Nintendo-themed area opening

Due to the ongoing pandemic, however, the theme park has made it a priority to avoid creating large crowds and close-contact settings.

We've been waiting for this news to break since the middle of March, but now it's finally happened: a new report says Universal Studios Japan is delaying the opening of its new Super Nintendo World indefinitely.

With the development of the new land seemingly going along well, it seems the biggest reason for the delay is the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, which has forced Japan to restrict and prohibit entry of global visitors, as well as sharply limit capacity at outdoor venues to help prevent the spread of the disease.

The initial plans were to have the park open in time for the Tokyo Olympics, which were supposed to kick off on July 24, 2020.

It's not exactly a surprise after the 2020 Summer Olympics got pushed back to 2021 for the same reason.

Many expected the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan to be delayed due to the pandemic. The focus on reopening the park and strengthening sanitation is being prioritized, and construction and preparation of the new section was also delayed due to the lockdown.

Universal Studios Japan and Nintendo were not immediately available for comment outside normal business hours.
