He then moved onto his two most hurtful offenses: using blackface makeup for old video sketches, and once using a racial slur. The star said there wasn't any excuse for what he did. "I said, 'Oh, this is amusing, ' and I put it on the internet". "There's no excuse for it, there's literally no excuse".
'I made a video six years ago talking about it and I gave excuses and it was wrong... It's me sitting at home, thinking the whole world hates me and crying and hyperventilating and then just turning on a web cam and just saying I'm sorry and hoping people know I'm a good person and then it'll go away. At this point, realizing how many people I've hurt or how many people I've inspired to say very bad things or do anything terrible, to finally just own up to all of this and be accountable is worth losing everything to me'.
He said that he was sorry for contributing to the normalization of blackface and the N-word, realizing his sketches made his young audience believe those things were amusing when they were not.
However, Dawson's past on the site is littered with controversy, as he created a blackface character hat appears to parody Black people, as well as making comments that critics deemed to be inappropriate on a previous podcast. Blackface in America began in the early 1800s, when white performers darkened their skin to mock Black people in minstrel shows.
In the video, Dawson also apologised for his inappropriate comments about children but did not mention Willow directly.
"Shane Dawson, I am disgusted by you", he tweeted. "It's all gross, and I promise that is not real, that is not me", he adds.
That is not to say that the YouTuber has not issued apologies regarding the same previously. The 31-year-old creator admitted he should have just "gone to therapy" and dealt with his problems rather than putting those things on the internet.
He said: 'I'm willing to lose everything. "That person was filled with sadness, filled with anger...[was] in the closet.I hate that person so f-king much".
Longtime YouTuber Shane Dawson has come out with a video apologizing for his past content that many viewers have found offensive, including his use of blackface and caricatures parodying people of color.
