If more Americans wore masks the pandemic would slow, experts say

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell R-Ky. listens to questions during a news conference following a GOP policy meeting on Capitol Hill Tuesday

Calls for wearing masks to help curb the spread of COVID-19 got louder in the U.S. on Monday as more Republicans and state officials advocated for face coverings.

Like how he repeated (multiple times) the false claim that masks can hurt more than they help slow the virus.

Republican Senator Tim Scott of SC also tweeted Monday that he encouraged everyone to wear a mask.

It comes after the Vice President previously dismissed face masks earlier in the pandemic, and on April 28, he refused to wear one while visiting Minnesota's Mayo Clinic. Wearing masks helps control the virus and has been shown to lower COVID-19 spread. "Your mask protects others and their mask protects you".

Alexander added that he "suggested that the President occasionally wear a mask" despite how it's not necessary for him to do so "in most cases".

Officials say COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Mike Pence has also declined to wear a mask, even during hospital visits, as well as during a press conference last week where the vice-president hailed the "truly remarkable progress" of the U.S. as it approached 130,000 deaths from Covid-19.

New Covid-19 infections are surging across much of the USA, with 2.6 million people now confirmed to have had the virus. "I don't see any downside to the president wearing a mask in public", Doocy said while interviewing Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. "Now they're doing a 180.let the president have the same sense and do that as an executive order". Face masks should not be worn by children under 2 years of age. The Chinese Consulate General in NY donated 5,000 masks to the Jermaine L. Green STEM Institute of Queens, a primary school with some 500 students, many of whom are from minority groups.

Last week, a University of Washington health institute projected that there would be 33,000 fewer deaths from COVID-19 by October if 95 percent of Americans wore masks now.

Pollitt said she has had a positive response from schools in CT to her urgings to wear masks but added there is "definitely a cultural shift" needed for Americans to fully embrace them.

In its first projections comparing different actions to control COVID-19 transmission, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) forecast almost 180,000 in the United States will die by Oct 1.

"People need to know that wearing masks can reduce transmission of the virus by as much as 50 percent, and those who refuse are putting their lives, their families, their friends, and their communities at risk", said Murray. In Palm Beach county in Florida, which is now fining people $250 for not wearing a mask, a public feedback forum last week featured residents falsely claiming that masks kill people, that they impede "God's wonderful breathing system" and that they are a politically-motivated tool created to kill off freedoms.
