"Sport brings communities together, and I am proud of our government's continuing work to support all levels of sport to return to play and work toward our 'new normal.' Our collective efforts made B.C. a strong contender, and we will continue to consider all opportunities to showcase sport in B.C".

The Canucks thanked British Columbia's Premier John Horgan, Minister Lisa Beare, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and their fans for their support as they worked through the opportunity to host National Hockey League teams in Vancouver.

The team says it will now look forward to welcoming its players back for training camp.

John Horgan, premier of British Columbia, tweeted that he would cheer for the Canucks when play resumes, but said public health concerns took priority.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry had signed off on Vancouver as a host, provided that "a very strict modified team quarantine" was followed.

"I love the NHL", Dix said, when asked about the Vancouver-NHL bid potentially being scuttled.

Under B.C.'s plan, a team would have stayed in one hotel and travelled together to Rogers Arena for games using private transportation.

Horgan previously expressed hope that B.C.'s plan would give Vancouver an economic boost. "Our case, we make at three o'clock every day, which is that public health counts No. 1 in B.C., and that matters for the National Hockey League, and it should matter for everybody else".

"But frankly, if you're talking about the health of the players, if you're talking about the health of society, you're talking about public health measures, you're talking about an outstanding leader on public health. this is the place to come". The contingency plan could have involved temporarily suspending a playoff series, she added.

The NHL is expected to announced hub cities by the end of the week.

Toronto and Edmonton remain the only Canadian cities left in the running while American cities in contention include Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago.
